Marriott Bonvoy vs. Hilton Honors vs. World of Hyatt: Which Hotel Points Are Worth More?

July 17, 20267 min readChurn Team

Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and World of Hyatt all hand out points by the tens of thousands, which makes them feel similar at first glance. They are not. Once you adjust for how many points each program actually gives you per dollar spent, the value per point looks completely different -- and the smallest program on this list usually wins.

The Short Answer

World of Hyatt issues far fewer points per dollar than Marriott or Hilton, but each Hyatt point is worth roughly two to three times as much at redemption. Marriott has the largest global footprint, which matters if availability is your bottleneck. Hilton inflates points the most aggressively, so a big-looking Hilton balance is often worth less in real terms than it appears.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Marriott Bonvoy

Marriott's biggest advantage is footprint -- with more properties worldwide than Hilton and Hyatt combined, you are more likely to find award availability in a random city. The catch is that Marriott awards a huge number of points per dollar of spend, which flatters your balance while diluting what each point is actually worth on redemption.

Hilton Honors

Hilton issues points even more generously than Marriott -- 10x or more on co-brand card spend is common -- which is exactly why Hilton points consistently value the lowest per point of the three. Hilton can still be a great deal in absolute terms (free nights add up fast with that much earning), just do not compare a Hilton balance to a Hyatt balance point-for-point.

World of Hyatt

Hyatt is the smallest program of the three by property count, but it is the one experienced churners chase hardest. Because Hyatt awards far fewer points per dollar, the program can afford to price redemptions much more generously -- award nights at aspirational properties routinely redeem for outsized value compared to what Marriott or Hilton would charge for a comparable stay.

A Small Balance Isn't a Weak Balance

It is tempting to judge a wallet by total points count, but a modest Hyatt balance can be worth more than a much larger Marriott or Hilton balance. Churn's points and valuations tracker normalizes every program to an estimated cash value, so you can compare balances fairly instead of just by point count.

Which to Prioritize

  • Want the most award availability, anywhere: Marriott Bonvoy -- the largest footprint wins when you need flexibility over value.
  • Stay often, want fast free-night accumulation: Hilton Honors -- the generous earn rate makes free nights come quickly even if each point is worth less.
  • Want the best value per point, and can plan ahead: World of Hyatt -- smaller footprint, but consistently the strongest redemption value of the three.

Don't Let Points Expire Before You Use Them

Hotel points are just as prone to silent expiration as airline miles. Churn's points and valuations tracker flags balances approaching their expiration window across all three of these programs, so outsized Hyatt value never gets wiped out by an inactivity clock.

The Bottom Line

Do not compare hotel programs by balance size alone -- compare by value per point, adjusted for how generously each program actually issues points. On that basis, Hyatt is the quality play, Marriott is the flexibility play, and Hilton is the volume play. Most serious churners end up holding all three for exactly those different reasons.
