Capital One Venture X vs Chase Sapphire Reserve (2026)
These are the two premium travel cards most US churners weigh against each other, and in 2026 they are further apart than they used to be. As of October 2026, the Venture X costs $395 a year and the Sapphire Reserve costs $795. The question is whether the Reserve's extra $400 buys you anything you will use.
The fee after the easy credit
Both cards have a $300 travel credit, but they are not the same credit. The Venture X's applies to bookings through Capital One Travel. The Reserve's applies to travel purchases in general, which is easier to use without changing how you book.
Count only that credit and the Venture X costs $95 a year and the Reserve $495. The Reserve's other credits, including $500 a year for stays booked through The Edit and a long list of dining, entertainment and subscription credits, are worth what you would have spent anyway, and no more. Churn's card pages list each credit with its amount; go through them and add up only the ones you would use without the card.
Earning
Venture X: 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars and 5 on flights booked through Capital One Travel, 5 on Capital One Entertainment, and 2 on everything else.
Sapphire Reserve: 8 points per dollar through Chase Travel, 4 on flights and hotels booked directly, 3 on dining, and 1 on everything else.
At Churn's valuations (1.4 cents for Capital One miles, 1.7 for Ultimate Rewards), the Venture X's 2x is worth about 2.8 cents on every purchase without a bonus. The Reserve's 1x is worth 1.7. On $30,000 a year of ordinary spending, that gap is about $330 in the Venture X's favour. The Reserve catches up on dining and on travel booked direct, and wins if most of your spending is in those two categories.

Transfers
Both programs transfer to airline and hotel partners. The difference that matters most in 2026 is Hyatt: Ultimate Rewards from the Reserve still move to World of Hyatt at 1:1, while the Sapphire Preferred has moved to 4:3. If Hyatt is where you use points, the Reserve is the card that keeps it at full value; see the Hyatt change. The transfers page lists both banks' partners and ratios.
Lounges and travel benefits
- Lounges: the Venture X gets you into Capital One Lounges and Priority Pass lounges; the Reserve into Chase Sapphire Lounges and Priority Pass lounges. Which is better depends on your home airport.
- Rental cars: both include primary collision damage coverage when you pay with the card. See primary vs. secondary coverage.
- Abroad: neither charges a foreign transaction fee.
- Big spenders: the Reserve adds hotel and airline status benefits after $75,000 of spending in a calendar year.
Bonus rules
Capital One won't pay the Venture X bonus if you earned it in the past 48 months. Chase says the Reserve bonus may not be available if you previously held the card or earned its bonus. Both count toward Chase's 5/24, and Capital One generally approves one new card every six months. See US application rules by issuer before you apply.
Which one
- The Venture X if you want one premium card that earns well on everything, you will book through Capital One Travel to use the $300 credit, and lounge access matters more than credits.
- The Sapphire Reserve if you spend heavily on dining and direct travel, transfer to Hyatt, and will actually use enough of the credits to cover most of the extra $400.
Plenty of churners hold both: the Venture X for everyday spending, the Reserve for dining and its transfers. If you only want one, the Venture X is the cheaper card to be wrong about.
