The Complete Guide to Amex Membership Rewards (MR) Points

March 9, 20268 min readChurn Team

Amex Membership Rewards (MR) is one of the most versatile points currencies in the world. With a wide network of transfer partners spanning airlines and hotels (Amex continues to add new partners over time), strong earning rates through cards like the Gold and Platinum, and flexible redemption options, MR points can deliver anywhere from 1 cent to 6+ cents per point depending on how you use them. Here is everything you need to know.

The Best Cards for Earning MR Points

How to Earn MR Points

The Amex Gold and Platinum are the primary MR-earning cards. The Gold earns 4x on dining and groceries (up to $25,000/year on groceries), while the Platinum earns 5x on flights. For a complete earning setup:

Use the Gold for all dining and grocery purchases (4x MR), the Platinum for flights booked directly with airlines (5x MR), and a Blue Business Plus (if eligible) for 2x MR on everything else up to $50,000/year. This three-card combo ensures you earn at least 2x MR on every dollar.

Earning Velocity

A household spending $2,000/month on dining and groceries earns 96,000 MR per year from the Gold alone. Add Platinum flights and everyday spending, and you can realistically earn 150,000-200,000 MR annually without any signup bonuses.

MR Point Valuations

The value of an MR point depends entirely on how you redeem it:

  • Statement credits: 0.6 cents per point. The worst option by far -- avoid this unless you are desperate.
  • Amex Travel portal: 1 cent per point (or 1.5 cpp with the Platinum on select bookings). Decent for domestic flights and hotels.
  • Transfer to airline partners: 1.5-6+ cents per point. This is where MR points truly shine.
  • Transfer to hotel partners: 0.7-1.5 cents per point. Generally not as strong as airline transfers.

Best Airline Transfer Partners

MR points transfer 1:1 to most airline partners, and the sweet spots can deliver extraordinary value:

  • ANA (All Nippon Airways): The single best MR transfer partner. As of early 2026, round-trip first class from the US to Japan costs around 110,000-120,000 points depending on the route (ANA periodically adjusts their award chart). At retail prices of $15,000-20,000+, that is 12-18 cents per point. ANA also offers business class to Japan for 75,000-95,000 points round-trip.
  • Air Canada Aeroplan: Excellent for Star Alliance bookings. Business class to Europe currently starts around 70,000 points one-way, and Aeroplan allows free stopovers on round-trip awards -- one of the best features of any loyalty program.
  • Virgin Atlantic: The secret weapon for Delta flights. Transfer MR to Virgin Atlantic and book Delta One business class for around 50,000-75,000 points one-way to Europe (pricing varies by route and availability), versus 120,000+ through Delta directly.
  • Singapore Airlines: Business class from the US to Asia for around 86,000-95,000 points one-way on the world-renowned SQ product. Award pricing can vary by route and class.
  • British Airways: Best for short-haul Avios redemptions. Domestic American Airlines flights on off-peak dates can cost as little as 7,500 Avios one-way, though peak pricing runs higher.

Transfer Timing

MR transfers to most partners are instant, but some (like ANA) can take 24-48 hours. Never transfer speculatively -- find and hold the award booking first, then transfer the exact number of points needed. Transferred points cannot be moved back to MR.

Hotel Transfer Partners

MR points transfer to Hilton Honors at a 1:2 ratio (1 MR = 2 Hilton points) and to Marriott Bonvoy at a 1:1 ratio. Hilton transfers can be decent for aspirational properties (the Waldorf Astoria Maldives at 120,000 Hilton points per night = 60,000 MR), but airline transfers generally deliver better value.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Redeeming for gift cards or merchandise: You will get 0.5-0.7 cents per point. Always transfer to partners instead.
  • Transferring without a booking in mind: Once points leave MR, they are stuck in the partner program. Transfer only when you have a specific award in mind.
  • Ignoring transfer bonuses: Amex regularly offers 20-40% transfer bonuses to select partners. A 30% bonus to Virgin Atlantic means 100,000 MR becomes 130,000 Virgin miles.
  • Letting MR points expire: MR points do not expire as long as you hold at least one MR-earning card. Cancel all your Amex cards and you lose your points.

The MR Strategy Summary

Earn MR through the Gold (dining/groceries) and Platinum (flights). Hoard points until you have a specific redemption in mind. Transfer to ANA for maximum value on premium cabins, or Virgin Atlantic for Delta flights. Never redeem for statement credits. Watch for transfer bonuses to amplify your stash.
